First he found a new daughter for the Gearge + Ann Riddel together with her two marriages. He wrote:

I suspect that you can add another child - Jane McTavish (maiden name Mutch, mother’s name Riddall, died at St Machar 7 Feb 1899 age 89 (90 on tombstone). According to censuses she was born at Belhelvie, about 1810.

Jane Mutch married John Sangster 16/5/1829 Belhelvie, and married Angus McTavish 29/7/1858 also Belhelvie

Ian then went on to suggest that two family lines previously shown [G1] George + Ann Riddel and [G3] George + Mary Mackie were the same George. He wrote:

I think that I have made an interesting link, suggesting that G1 and G3 were the same person. Both are at Belhelvie. G3 married Mary Mackie in 1792 and had a family there from 1793 to 1806. G1 married Ann Riddell in 1808 and had a family there from about 1810 to 1816 (perhaps later). There is no overlap in the children’s names. When Alexander (A22) eldest son of the first marriage died in 1867 you noted that the informant was his ‘half nephew’ George Sangster. Jane Mutch, of the second marriage, married John Sangster in 1829 and their eldest son was George Sangster (1829 - 1915) who would have been the half-nephew of Alexander of the first marriage.

After further correspondence and record research I agreed with Ian’s conclusion that both of these family lines were indeed one, so I have now consolidated them under G1. The only missing brick is confirmation of Mary Mackie’s death between 1806 and 1808.

This lists her as widow of George Mutch, Blacksmith. The informant was Wlliam Ogston, son-in-law, and this led me to daughter Elizabeth’s wedding details.

The census for 1851 shows Rachel & Elizabeth sharing Hillhead, Esslemomnt with several other Skene housholds, which might be siblings and their families. Rachel is listed as a Widow. The 1861 census is similar but lists their address as Hillhead of Chapelhall.

Rachel’s birth year is approximate and is taken from the census records.

After I checked my records, I was not able to locate where this information came from. I have therefor decided to replace Christian’s entry with Ian’s research results.

Ian had provided details of daughter Christian and David Murray’s possible marriage and his justification. He wrote:

My assumption - and it is only an assumption! - is because both Christian Mutch (1732) and David Murray (1733) were born/baptized in New Machar where the marriage took place (1761).

My interest in the Mutch family is because I seem to have quite a few of their descendants with DNA links to me but I can’t yet find a direct link. I do have a direct link with the Murrays of New Machar (via my great grandmother).

David Murray was baptized 29 November 1733, son of William Murray of Little Rainnieshill, New Machar, and his wife Christian Williamson. He married (probably/possibly) Christian Mutch at New Machar in 1761 and two children are recorded: Alexander (1763 - 1821) who married Christian Davidson in 1785 and had three children; and Christian, baptized in 1767. I have not located death dates for either David Murray or his wife.

I have eight DNA matches who trace their ancestry back to Alexander Mutch (b.1720) brother of Christian who may have married David Murray. Also six matches that go back to William Mutch (1744 - 99) whose family was at Peterhead and Logie Buchan.
