Webmaster's notes:

This family line is listed a B5 in the 1929 Mutch Genealogy. John's parents are given as David + Jean Singer.
Further details have been taken from the GenCircles listings posted by James M Hay.
I would like to add a new line for James + June Tough as it is stated they married in 1854 in Scotland, but I can't find any details of this marriage in IGI. Can anyone help?
Carolyn Williams of Palo Alto, California has written:

I am looking for descendants of William Bunt Mutch and Harriet Bennett Mutch who lived in Hillsboro, Wisc. My great great grandmother was Harriet's sister and I would like to see if their descendants have information about the Bennett family.

Marcie Maine-Davies has provided details of her connection to this family line. She wrote:

... the Mutch line enters my line (MAINE) 3 April 1884, when Ida Emeline Mutch married Eugene Byron Maine. I assume in Wisconsin because that is where she was born.

Stephen Mutch wrote to say that he was descended from this family line:

... I have found John mutch J65 son of David Mutch (D1). The children of john, his wife, birth and death dates match with my info. My line in his family is kid number iii, William Bunt. I noticed child iv (of William's) is my great grandfather Frank Eugene. The only thing I know is that he married Helen Horton who had 4 boys, one my grandpa who died before i was born. Eugene ran off on the family and my grandpa was send to an orphanage with his 3 brothers. Any info at all about Eugene would help a lot.

Harriet Adams has provided the following interesting anecdote about son William's romantic plans:

I can add an interesting detail. James (b 6 Aug 1826) and his younger brother--my great grandfather--William Bunt (b 5 Jan 1829) emigrated from Scotland to Ohio in 1851. In 1853 they moved on to Hillsboro Twp, WI, where they settled on adjoining homesteads. In 1854, leaving William to oversee their joint lands, James returned to Scotland to marry Jane and bring William's sweetheart to Wisconsin. Apparently she was an early believer in women's rights, because she said if William wanted her he'd have to come after her himself! William was stubborn too, and four years later, on 20 July 1858, married teacher Harriet Newell Bennett who brought to our line a substantial Mayflower heritage. (Although the name of William's Scottish lassie is not recorded, I have a letter William's father wrote to him in 1861 mentioning that "Ann Forbes has never got married yet nor never will I suppose--". Suggestive, at least!)

Harriet also found this reference:

This excerpt is from History of Vernon County, Wisconsin, p.573, which Google Books now has online. Of particular interest to me is the mention of James returning to Scotland in 1853 where he married Jane Tough before returning in 1854 to the Wisconsin farm William had purchased for himself and his brother during James' absence. It coincides exactly with my grandmother's telling of our Mutch family history. According to Grandma, James returned to Scotland specifically to marry his sweetheart Jane.

<--------- James Mutch is the elder of five brothers who were early settlers in the town of Hillsborough—John, Robert, William and Alexander are the other four. The first three are still residents of the town. James Mutch was born in Scotland, in 1826, and in 1850, with his brother William, emigrated to Ohio. In 1853, William came to Wisconsin to look for land for the two. While he was in this State, James returned to Scotland, and was there married to Jane Tough. William had bought a farm of a man named Fritchie, in the town of Hillsborough, Vernon county, and in 1854, James and wife came direct to the new purchase. William lived with his brother and family for several years, and then purchased 320 acres of land on sections 1 and 12, which, with some subsequent additions, comprises the farms of the two brothers. James Mutch is a man highly esteemed in the community in which he lives. He is liberal in his support of Churches and schools, and, although not a member of that body, assisted most liberally in erecting the United Brethern church of the village, and in supporting it. Mr. Mutch and wife have two children—William and Clarence. William, the other brother, married Harriet Bennett, and nine children have been sent to bless their union. He is also a prominent and well known citizen of Hillsborough town, and at present is on a visit to his native land —"Bonnie Scotland." --------->
